Muzzle Loading Cannon Class!

Saturday April 13, 2024 at George Rogers Clark Park near Springfield Ohio

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA) Certified Cannon Instructors from the First Mad River Light Artillery (FMRLA) and the 4th Indiana Light Artillery– will be presenting a class in Muzzle Loading Artillery.

The class will provide an overview of muzzle loading artillery with an emphasis on safety. Class Members will receive hands on experience manning both the FMRLA’s reproduction 18th century British 6 lb. light artillery piece and 4th Indiana Light Artillery’s reproduction 19th century Civil War 3 inch Ordinance Rifle. Each student will have the opportunity to experience the different firing sequence and ignition systems of the 18th century and the 19th century cannons from 5 different crew positions on each of the 2 cannons.

The cost of the class is $90 for GRCHA members and $100 to non-members. If you are repeating the class, please bring your printed materials from the last class (those materials that have been revised since your last class will be updated) and the cost to you will be $85 for GRCHA members and $95 for non-members.

This class will begin early Saturday morning and continue until dusk. Class size is limited. 2024 Upcoming Events

Upcoming Events that involve the cannon or may be of interest to the crew were discussed and a list is below. More information will follow as times etc. are determined.   

March 2024

  • Saturday March 2, & Sunday March 3 Olde Town Trade Fair. Greene County Fair Grounds – Need Crew to help man the GRCHA table.
  • Saturday March 9 – starting at 10 am we are Cleaning the Cannon and organizing the Trailer at the GH.

April 2024

  • Saturday April 13 – Muzzle Loading Cannon Class held at the Gathering House at the GRC Park.  We will begin class at 8:30 am and will begin firing the gun after lunch. Need Cannon and Crew.

May 2024

  • Saturday May 4 and Sunday May 5 – Prelude to Revolution F & I event at GRC Park. Need Cannon and Crew.
  • Thursday May 16, through Saturday May 19 – Findlay Time line. Set up Thursday, timeline Saturday. Need Cannon and Crew. 
  • Monday May 27 – Memorial Day Parade Springfield.  Arrive at rally point in Cliff Park, Springfield at 8 am.  Need Cannon and Crew.  (Tim D. and Andy Shuirr to coordinate)

July 2024

  • Wednesday July 3 – History Program and start Enon fireworks at the ballparkNeed Cannon and Crew. Program begins at 7 pm, fireworks will begin about 9 pm. Please arrive at the Enon VFW at 6:30 to help unload and set up the gun. 
  • Thursday July 4  – Enon Parade – Need Cannon and Crew.  The Parade begins at 2, the line up is at 1 pm and we may park at Tim’s house. 
  • Friday July 26, Saturday July 27 and Sunday 28 – Gathering at Garst – Need Crew. Set up Friday.

Cannon School Recap – Saturday, April 6, 2019

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association certification class for muzzle loading cannon from the F&I War to Civil War eras was held on April 6, 2019 to a full class of attendees. Thank you to all who participated! We will be repeating this course again in the future, so please watch this page for information. Following is a class description that we will follow again in for future Cannon School events.

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA) Certified Cannon Instructors from the First Mad River Light Artillery (FMRLA) and the 4th Indiana Light Artillery present the class in Muzzle Loading Artillery.

The class provides an overview of muzzle loading artillery with an emphasis on safety. Class Members receive hands-on experience manning both the FMRLA’s reproduction 18th century British Light 6-Pdr. Battalion Gun and the 4th Indiana Light Artillery’s reproduction 19th century Civil War 3 inch Ordinance Rifle. Each student has the opportunity to experience the different firing sequences and ignition systems of the 18th century gun and the 19th century gun from each of the different crew positions on the two guns.

The cost of the class is $70 for GRCHA members and $80 for non-members. If you are repeating the class, please bring your printed materials from the last class (those materials that have been revised since your last class will be updated) and the cost to you will be $65 for GRCHA members and $75 for non-members.

The class will begins early, typically on a Saturday morning and continues until dusk. Class size is limited. This opportunity is offered to GRCHA members before the public as this class fills up quickly.
